7 Things I Paid Attention to This Week #006
Super Bowl, Lebron James, Vigilantes of Love, Damar Hamlin, and More...
Happy Friday, and Happy Super Bowl Weekend!
You might not care about grown men playing with a ball this weekend, but our city is buzzing with excitement. The Kansas City Chiefs will play in their third Super Bowl in five years. Kind of a big deal.
Have some wings and dips and root for the Chiefs… or not, we’re all adults here.
How about seven things I paid attention to this week?
1. Let’s keep the sports themes rolling. LeBron James broke the all time NBA scoring record Tuesday night. A record held by Kareem Abdul Jabbar for forty years. James came into the NBA from high school and endured all the pressure and hype surrounding his career. This milestone is a testimony to his longevity and love for the game. Read Kareem’s essay about LeBron.
2. Damar Hamlin gave a heartfelt speech about his recovery from cardiac arrest.
3. Few films capture the “ordinariness” and wonder and journey of life and getting older. Lucky is a small indie film that doesn’t disappoint.
4. I mentioned in our last newsletter about my rediscovery of the band Vigilantes of Love. Here is an essay I wrote about music and universal longings.
5. R.I.P. Burt Bacharach. Wrote some of the most iconic pop songs of the modern era.
6. A quote on the spirituality of wonder by Brennan Manning:
“The spirituality of wonder knows the world is charged with grace, that while sin and war, disease and death are terribly real, God's loving presence and power in our midst are even more real.”
7. Bookshelf: I just finished Wild Belief, a look at various poets and prophets in their search for spirituality in the wilderness.
Go Chiefs!
