7 Things I Paid Attention to This Week #009
Dehumanizing work, writing sheds, Jason Isbell, and cleaning out the soul
Happy Friday Friends!
Did you miss me last week? No, ok. That’s awkward.
Anyway, I was at a conference and appreciated a particular talk given around patience. We must learn patience in relationships, our work, art, and whatever we put out into the world.
Patience… A good word… Keep it close when things get hard.
Here are seven things I paid attention to this week:
1. Not all work is created equal. Work should dignify a person and not dehumanize them. Lillian Gilbreth did good work for this cause.
“Taylor’s purely behaviorist approach rendered the worker a mere tool, where Gilbreth saw a collaborator, a neighbor, and potentially even a friend.”
2. If I were to buy a writing cabin/shed, it would be this one. Check out these other famous writer sheds.
3. Eye Candy: I’m rewatching Succession before the release of the final season. Why? It’s a meditation on how power and money corrupts. We’ve seen this manifest itself in recent politics, and a warning for not falling into the same trap. Succession is also a masterclass in genius acting.
4. Ear Candy: Jason Isbell has a new single out. I saw him in concert last year, and worth every penny. Check this album, too.
5. The Bookshelf: my wife and I run an Airbnb, and are looking at other rental properties. This book is a helpful read. I’m also enjoying this book of poetry by Christian Wiman.
6. The Pods: a fun interview with John Livesay on the art of storytelling.
7. A quote for the Lenten season:

7. A quote for the Lenten season:
"Lent is a time for discipline, for confession, for honesty, not because God is mean or fault-finding or finger-pointing but because he wants us to know the joy of being cleaned out, ready for all the good things he now has in store.” — N.T. Wright
