Hello friends, and Happy Friday!
I hope your 2023 is getting off to a splendid start. Here are seven things I’m paying attention to this week:
1. Big Star is one of the more underrated bands from the 70s. I discovered them about ten years ago and found a spectacular documentary about their journey. My favorite song on their first album is below:
2. I made a pilgrimage to Half Price Books and found a favorite spiritual writer, Henri Nouwen. The book was fantastic, and also look at the other gift I found inside:
3. R.I.P Lisa Marie Presley. I recently watched the Elvis movie, and it’s a creative take on his rise to fame. Focuses a lot on his manager, who was nuts.
4. Whatever your line of work, it’s all about the people. People are not cogs in a machine. Lillian Gilbreth is highlighted in her anti-human-cog work. Let’s treat people as people. Great article here.
5. Another spiritual writer I just met is Daniel Berrigan. He was a Catholic priest, poet, and prophet who is famous for burning draft cards during Vietnam. I’m enjoying this work.
6. Digging the novel and film White Noise by Don DeLillo. Prophetic in the themes it wrestles with.
7. I wrote an essay about my walking habit. Here is a great quote about the gift of walking:
“Above all, do not lose your desire to walk: every day I walk myself into a state of well being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it.”
― Søren Kierkegaard
Have a great weekend!
